During the last eighteen years, Projahnmo has been working to
improve health of Bangladesh population and values a community-based
approach to research and intervention. Maternal, neonatal and childhood
health has been the primary focus of the Projahnmo research group.
It has established a platform to generate high quality evidences for improvement of
health and survival of mothers, new-borns and children by conducting high priority
translational research and providing policy and program
supports to Bangladesh Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization.
Nonetheless, Bangladesh like many other emerging economies is experiencing the health transition through our concerted efforts
to improve maternal and child health via primary care and outreach services. Such efforts
have resulted in improved preventive services; decreased birth rate; reduced maternal
mortality; reduced infant mortality, and the increased life expectancy.
These changes often are accompanied by increasing urbanization and industrialization
creating health problems similar to those seen in the “developed” world i.e.,
the high rates of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Our work is driven by the needs of
our population, and given the health transition towards NCDs, we have begun considering
this line of inquiry in our research projects.
